The feed rate and spindle speed during roughing are also set differently compared to finishing. We typically use a higher feed rate because we want to move the cutting tool through the material quickly. And the spindle speed is adjusted to match the type of material we’re working with and the cutting tool we’re using. For instance, when roughing a block of aluminum, we can use a relatively high spindle speed because aluminum is a soft material.

We use a roughing tool to quickly remove a lot of material, maybe taking off a few millimeters at a time. The surface of the part after roughing will be rough and uneven.
Then, for finishing, we switch to a finishing tool. We make small, precise cuts to smooth out the surface and get the exact dimensions we need. The final part will have a smooth, high – quality finish.
